exceeded the numbers of times to install Office v. X

I have a G4 that I have had nothing but problems on. Apple's latest
solution was to replace the computer completely. This one is working
fine, so far. I run OS X 10.2.6. Because of my computer problems, I
have had to install Office v. X a number of times. Apparently, one
too many times, according to my pop up message. Is there a work
around for this? I tried calling microsoft, but waited for over an
hour today for tech support with no one picking up, so i'm putting my
question out to the newsgroup. What is up with Microsoft?

Did you run the installer or use drag 'n drop?

Where in the install process did you get the error? Was it on entering the
CD key?

I'm in exactly the same boat for the same reason. The
problem is intermitten and is not fixed by rebooting, The
message says exceeded # of times can install. Says James
Farrow is already using word but I am James Farrow and
there is only 1 active user on my laptop. Word opens,
message appears and when i click ok, it closes. Ditto for
PP, and excel. Big problem. Work stopping. What to do. wait
hours on help line?

Hi

I know this is a long shot, but by any chance do you have a cable modem
connected? Maybe someone else in your neighborhood also has a copy of Office
running. If you have such a network connection, try unplugging the ethernet
cable and then try again.

Do you have other computers on your network?

Are you using Airport? Maybe a neighbor is "borrowing your connection".

One other thought is to use Remove Office before trying the install. This
will not touch your data, but it will remove ALL preferences. It will
require the CD key.

"Remove Office" is located in the Value Pack folder on the Office X CD. If
you have Office 2001, do not use the Remover available on the CD; it isn't
current. Download the Office 2001 Remover from Mactopia." Download Office
2001 Remover fromMactopia.

<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/>

"Remove Office" removes both preference files and custom templates, so you
should make a backup copy of the preferences and templates in another
location on the machine before running the removal tool. See Files to
Backup.

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/backup.html>

WARNING : The Remove Office tool can remove files that are installed by
Microsoft Office 98, Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac, and Office v. X,
including Microsoft shared libraries, such as Microsoft OLE, which might be
required by other programs. If a program does not start after you use the
Remove Office tool, try reinstalling the program to fix the problem.

All ok now. We had two laptops on-line with an airport. If
an office program is open, the other laptop can't open an
office program.. Otherwise it works fine. What a relief.I
didn't realize the laptops saw what was open on the other.
