Excel 03 desktop file icon problem

A fellow volunteer in our P2P office was prompted with some sort of question
on Monday and answered the prompt in some way. She did not write down what
the prompt said and after responding to the prompt she was not able to open
any excel files that we had placed on the desktop with their own icons. We
can, however, open the files by going to the drop-down window, selecting the
desktop, that particular icon and then using the open command.

Has anyone had this happen and what is the solution?

If you nee more info let me know.

Thanks for your help, anyone!

Sometimes one of these works when you're having trouble with double clicking on
the file in windows explorer:

Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)

--- or ---

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

Maybe one of these will work for you.

PS. I bet it wasn't her answer to the prompt that caused the problem. I'm
guessing that it was just a coincidence.
