Excel 2000 and 97 error: "unable to read file"

Excel files having multiple tabs, a single recorded macro,
multiple pivot tables and using the txt driver to connect
to a datasource cannot be opened again once saved.

this happened first random using Excel 97 SR 2, after
upgrading to Excel 2000 SR 1 it occurs in 50% of the cases.
Now using Excel 2000 SP 3 and no change. The files that
cannot be opened anymore appear to be smaller (5 MB rather
than 8 MB) than the same one that can be opened.

Any suggestions?

PS. OS is Windows 2000, latest SP and patches applied,
system is virus checked using an up to date antivirus software.
