Excel 2000 - Calculate on Status Bar

Everytime I enter a character on a cell, why does it keep
showing "Calculating" on the Status Bar of my
spreadsheet? What can I do so it will stop doing this?
It makes updating my cells very slow.

It means that you have lots of formulae that are re-calculating each time.

You can switch to manual calculation mode (menu Tools>Options Calculation
tab, and set the Manual button), and set back to automatic when all done. I
have toolbar buttons to toggle them.
