excel 2000-split a cell or a column or a row without transferring

Top row is all merged. Underneath is a row consisiting of several groups of
merged cells, each of which is acting as a heading for the columns
underneath. How to insert more blank columns underneath each heading? Thanks

Hi Esther

Just right click on the column heading where you want to insert>Insert

Imagine you have cells A2:C2 merged, and you want there to be 4 columns
under that merged section.
Right click D>Insert and now the merged cells will be A22

As a generality, Merged cells should be avoided as they can cause all sorts
of other problems when trying to carry out other tasks.
You can achieve the same appearance, by selecting the range of cells you
wish to "merge">Format>Cells>Alignment>Horizontal>Center across selection.
Once again, inserting extra columns will behave as previously described.

You can insert rows above or below merged cells but not in the middle of
merged cells.

If you have no extremely compelling reason to merge cells..........please
stay away from that feature.

They cause no end of problems.
