Excel 2000 stopped working after SP3 & security updates - why?

After Service Pack 3 and afterwards 10 security updates, Excel 2000 no
longer works - opens but the hourglass never goes away, and after
Control-Alt-Del Excel shows as "non-responding". What do I do now??
