Excel 2000 to many different cell formats

upon opening excel 2000 file, excel crashes and displays -
"To Many Different Cell Formats". clik on message - no
data appears but display indicates the file name as if
opened. Have opened file with word shows data is still
there...any ideas how to reopen - or is file lost for good
