Excel 2000 won't open Insufficient error Message

I double click on an excisting Excel doc or just on the
icon to open a blanck doc and it won't open. It just sits
there and it doesn't respond. I ultimately have to end the
task. Most of the time I'll also get an error message
saying that there is insufficient memory.
This is on a Win 98se pc, Office 2000 pro, P3 1Ghz, 512MB
RAM, and 40GB hard drive with 30GB of available space.
I have ran a repair on office but it didn't solve the
problem. I also did a virus scan.
Could anyone please help me, Thanks...

What other applications are open at the time? Go to Task manager and shut down
everything except systray explorer and your av, try opening Excel. If that
still hangs, shut down your av. BTW what AV are you running?
