Excel 2000 won't open - just hangs on the excel logo screen

When I try to open excel from program files or shortcut it opens as far as
the excel logo screen and the computer just hangs. The same thing happens if
I try to open from an existing excel document.
I can boot in safe mode and excel opens fine.
I have cleared out all start up programs so the computer boots only with
explorer running.
Any ideas of how to fix the problem

Most probably cause is a corrupt toolbar customisation file. Find all copies of
your Excel.xlb file (normally a hidden file, so make sure you include those in
the search!) and rename their extension to something like .old. If Excel starts
normally, delete these .old files.

Your assistance was most helpful and I have now resolved the excel problem.
It was a nasty ,xlb file that was causing the hiccup....by removing the xlb
file excel is now clean as.
