Excel 2001

Here's a real puzzler.

My wife has an older iMac with 96 meg ram. The OS is 8.6

It's been running Office 2001 for some time with no real issues.

Now Excel refuses to run. It freezes during the splash screen and I need to
reboot the computer.

I have done the following:

Zap pram and rebuild desktop.
Trashes MS preferences
Reinstalled Office 2001 from original disk.
Tried with and without virtual memory.

Every Office application freezes when it hits the Excel initialization portion
and of course Excel won't work either.

Explorer works as does Appleworks and other apps.

Any suggestions of what I might try?

When you reinstalled Office:2001, did you first remove the previous install
using the "Remove office 98 and 2001 tool" ? If you didn't, I strongly
suggest that you download it from Mactopia:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx#Office2001

Then run it restart your computer and reinstall from the CD.

Well, if you already did, I couldn't say :-(

As it seems you haven't run it, it's likely that this will solve the
problem. There are lots of files scattered around on your HD, and it's not
easy to get them all. That's why the "Remove Office" was designed and it
usually works fine.
