When I open a folder in the "My Computer" environment, I cannot ope an Excel
file by double clicking on it. All that happens is Excel opens and I then
have to go to the "Open File" feature to open the file. Any suggestions or
solutions anybody?

1. On the Tools menu, click Options. Select the General tab.
2. Clear the Ignore Other Applications check box and click OK.

Hey Bob1, Thanks for the response, but it does not work. I followed your
instruction only to find that the particular check box you referenced was not
checked. So, back to square one. Still cannot double click on an Excel file
to open it.

Does the file eventually open if you wait awhile?

No, all that opens is Excel, the file does not open. I have to go to "open
file", browse for the file, and select it to open.

It has the function, but I get a message saying I don't have access to that
feature and to verify that it exisits?

Then it would appear that something has been hosed on your installation.
Get out the Office CD, and do an UNinstall, and then reinstall Office.

Make Sure all instances of Excel are closed.
Open Excel normally through programs.
Start > Programs > Excel
In Excel open the Options window.
Tools > Options
Click on the General Tab and uncheck the box for ‘Ignore other
applications’
Save changes and close Options.

Now when you click and Excel file outside of the program it will work.

This is a known issue in Excel. I have seen it in a couple of
versions. There is no known cause, and it may or may not come back.

Thanks for the response, but that has already been explored and is not the
cause of my problem. It was, in fact, the first reply I rec'd. That
particular "check box", under "Options", was not selected when I started
Excel.

NOW it seems I am having the same problem with Word too!! Crap!! I think it
has something to do with Windows Installer! I keep seeing this window pop up
right after I double-click on a file! Friday, I had no problems with Word
and today I can't double-click a Word file to open it.
