Excel 2002 Custom Autofilter

I am not getting data returned when, in Custom Autofilter,
I enter commands like "is greater than" and "is less
than". There is data in the column that SHOULD be
returned, but is not. "Is Equal to" works. I have tried
formatting the cells as numbers, as text, and also as
general. It does not matter is the number has leading
zeros or not. Are there formatting elements that prevent
custom autofiltering from working?
