Excel 2002 drives me nuts...

Hi,

I have a problem which I cannot find any solution...

I'm opening excel, opening files - so far, so good..

However, there are many times that when I'm closing an Excel document,
the machine simply freezes for a while until I do ALT CTRL DEL, run task
manager and kill excel (few times)...

This is Office XP with all SP installed + updates, on Windows XP with all SP
installed + updates...

Suggestions please?
Thanks,
Hetz

Hetz,

Often, the behavior of one program is influenced by many others. Try
booting into safe mode, and not running any other programs - antivirus
programs are especially problematic - and see if you get the same
behavior.

If you do, then try starting Excel without any add-ins or other
auto-loaded files and.... anyway, start here, with full instructions
on what to do:

Thanks for your help Bernie,

But starting up is not the problem. It's exiting - the problem..

Thanks,
Hetz

Hetz,

I understand that exiting is the problem, but troubleshooting it
should follow the same steps.

A few more things:

Clean up your windows temp folder (may not help, but can't hurt).

And one of the things that xl does when it's closing is to update the custom
toolbar file (*.xlb--you can use windows|Find to search for it).

Rename it to *.xlbOLD and experiment with xl to see if that helped. If it did,
then dump the old and rebuild your custom toolbars. This *.xlb file can become
bloated and corrupted. About a year ago, I dumped my old version (over 450k)
and recreated it with a similar set of icons. It went down to 11k.
