Excel 2002 opens but shows desktop in the window

I have a problem that popped up today on two
machines...if you open an excel 2002 file from your
desktop it will open Excel show the FILE -- EDIT menus
but in the window where the file should show it shows the
desktop...I have tried resizing the screen, messing with
the WINDOW menu to try split/tile/etc and nothing works.

The work around is to open Excel first then use the OPEN
menu to open the file...then there is no problems.

Any ideas??

I'm wondering if there is a more official fix as well, but
check the following. Exit out of all Excel application
windows. Then check the Task Manager and see if you still
see EXCEL.EXE as a running process. If so, end that
process and then try double-clicking the file again. It
should open find from the Desktop now.

I'm hoping someone else out there has a better answer.
