Excel 2002 won't open .csv files

Puzzle ...

Using Excel 2002 on a Win 2KPro workstation, SP4 applied. Open Windows
Explorer, and open a folder on the server which contains several XXX_XXX.CSV
files which have been imported over the WAN to this folder. Attempt to open
any of these files results in the following message. "XXX_XXX.CSV cannot be
accessed. The file may be read-only, or you may be trying to access a
read-only location."

If I attempt to open the file as read-only, I get the same message. If I
try to open as a copy I get the same message, except the message refers to
the file as "XXX_XXX.CSV (copy1)"

Yet I can use any Win98 workstation and Excel 2000, and the file opens
immediately.

What is happening here, and how can I configure the Win 2K workstation to
open the csv files?

Thanks

Ted

Found a work-around ...

I created a simple batch file on the Win2K workstation that copies the .CSV
files onto the local C: drive. Excel has no problem opening the files on
the local drive. I think the problem is related to Win2K and Excel wanting
to use SMB protocol, which our server does not "speak".

Anyhow, the workaround is simple, doesn't involve registry editing, etc., so
we are going to proceed using the workaround.

Thanks

Ted
