Excel 2002

Since the last Office XP update I have a user with some weird errors. She
clicks on the close up in the right hand corner and it will only close one
spreadsheet at a time. If she has 3 open she has to click 3 times and then
one more to close Excel. Also she cannot add buttons to the tool bar and
have them show up when restating Excel. Anyone else seen anything like this?

1. Perhaps she is clicking on the wrong "X". Should have a close "X" for
Excel and one each for the workbooks.

If she has no close "X" for Excel, perhaps she is running GroupWise which
grays out that "X".

If that's the problem. See this MSKB article

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;260199

Article is specific for 2000 but I think it is valid for other versions.

It gives a workaround (use the file menu) and instructions as to how to remove
the Groupwise add-in that is responsible for this behavior.

2. Manual customizations are saved in a file named *.XLB

XL2000 and 2002 *.xlb file will be in Documents and
Settings\yourname\application data\microsoft\Excel and be Excel9.xlb
or Excel10.xlb

Excel 97 in C:\Windows and named username.XLB

Ecel 2003 same as 2000 and 2002 and named Excel11.XLB

Perhaps this file is going astray? If on a server, this can happen.

Also if on a server, you may not have permissions to save. See your IT guy or
Administrator.

Search for *.xlb and see what you come up with. When you get your
customization done, make a backup copy of the *.xlb file.

One more fact about *.xlb files. If they become too large, they
have been known to cause problems with Excel.

We do look use GroupWise so I will look into this. I got onto her machine
and she does click the X up on the far right.
