There would be something wrong with the file association so you can try to
repair Excel... I'm not sure where it is in Excel 2002 but in Excel 2003
it's Detect and Repair in the Help menu...
It is saving incrementally, as though you were using save as rather than
save. A copy is saved with a new reference number for every time you hit the
save button.
Yes it act like if it was a template so if the template format is associated
to the normal excel format it could possibly enter into an endless save as
loop...
Try the repair feature, it can't hurt and may solve that issue...
