Excel 2002

I have installed over a time period - Excel from
diskettes, then use Excel 97 update, then the Excel 2002
upgrade. All was working correctly until several months
back when as I tried to run Excel 2002 the program would
hang up until I did an Alt Ctrl Del. Then the program
would start again but only in safe mode.
Have tried uninstalling all versions and reinstalling
but it would still do the same thing.
If I installed the 97 upgrade only, the program would
work correctly.
Now, if I tried installing the 2002 upgrade, an error
code 1616 is shown concerning Visual Fox(??) which I have
never installed.
Any ideas?
