Excel 2003 Crashing after a few hours

As subject states, one of my users works in about 10 different spreadsheets
all day long (5 of them are shared workbooks) and roughly every 3 hours excel
says there has been a problem and will close and recover the spreadsheets.
Sometimes it won't even give the warning message but you can still use
autorecover. This problem has only started since the user had a new printer
but the printer driver is windows verified and other users with the same
printer have no problems at all.

The error message logged in event viewer says the faulting app is excel.exe
and the faulting module is mso.dll - I even tried a different PC and it still
crashed after 3 hours. Any ideas?

Trying to isolate a bit in my mind.....you say you tried a new computer, does
that mean you disconnected the user's computer and put another one in it's
place, or maybe tried using their logon on another computer.......

Have you tried removing the printer that was added which started the
problem.....just to see if the problem goes away..maybe do a Windows restore
to that point before the printer installation.

Is this only one Excel file we're talking about, or does the computer itself
crash every three hours, even if Excel isn't open?

May be MIS performing some sort of switch approximately every three hours.

Hi CLR,

The PC is on a network, so i had the user log in at another PC i just built
- fresh install of office, windows - all fully updated. She had exactly the
same result - but was using the same shared printer. I then uninstalled the
printer and gave her a new printer to use (different make too) and it still
happened. Could there be something wrong with one of the files do you think?
- these are old files that were created about 12 years ago and saved as 2K3
workbooks. From what i can see there are no macros in any of them.

It would seem that from your test resulte, that the trouble is with either
one of the files or more), or with Excel 2003 itself. I have no experience
with XL03, but what I would do is to set a spare computer up to allow this
user to log on more than once,(as there may be something to do with her log
in) and then load only half of the files she uses normally and see if it
crashes after 3 hours. If not, then load up with the other half, and if it
crashes then, therein lies the culpret......further isolation should point to
the problem file.....or it may still be with her log-in. Try it using your
own log in.
