Excel 2003 doesn't save files with the Excel icon. Why?

I just installed Office 2003 Pro. When I create a file in Excel, it doesn't
save it with the Excel icon. If you click on the file without the Excel
program being open, it won't open until you choose Excel from a list of
programs. The Word program seems to work fine.
