excel 2003 minimized files do not display file name

in Excel 2003 minimized files used to display their file name while in the
Windows task bar. Additionally, when I placed the mouse cursor on the
minimized file, a small dialog box would show the file name too.

Suddenly, neither of these things are happening anymore. I have, somehow,
turned this feature off and I am hoping that someone can tell me how to turn
it back on.

Hello and thank you for your suggestion. Selecting windows in taskbar does
not change what I am seeing on the screen. Each minimized file has a
rectangular box in the task bar and inside the rectangle is the Excel logo
and Microsoft Excel in printing. Very recently, though, these rectangles
would also contain the file name and when moused over a dialog box would pop
up giving the file name. Now the poped up dialog box 'just contains
Microsoft Excel.
Any additional suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Microsoft Excel - filename.xls or just Microsoft Excel?

What is displayed when a Word file is open and minimized?

It is possible through VBA to change the caption in the title bar. Perhaps this
has been done?

In Word, the minimized file displays the file name. When I open an excel
file, iget a window, with tool bars and menus that is called "Microsoft
Excel" and, below the
formula bar the actual spread sheet is open and you can see the name of the
file at the top of that spreadsheet. It is possible to size the window
titled "Microsoft Excel" and it is possible to independently size the spread
sheet that opens within the "Microsoft Excel" window. You can't make the
file window larger than the "Microsoft Excel" window, but you can make it
smaller.

A long time ago I had someone make my Excel open each file in a separate
window as long as I opened the file by double clicking on it. If I go to the
file menu and select open and then a file, the file would open in the same
Excel window. I tell you this because I don't know how important it is. At
any rate, what I am experiencing now is less than a week old and that change
was made months ago.

I don't know what VBA is or how to use it to change captions in the title
bar, but it sounds like I may have done it inadvertently. Can you tell me
what to do?

I do not believe you have any code running to change the the caption.

After mulling this over a few whiles....................................

If you have Windows in Taskbar disabled, when you minimize the workbook what you
are seeing in the taskbar is just the title bar for the Excel application, which
has no file name to show because the file is minimized.

If you hover over the minimized file bar you should see just the filename ballon
tip.

If you have Windows in Taskbar enabled, you will see the filename on the taskbar
but not the "Microsoft Excel".

Try it with Windows in Taskbar enabled or disabled and maximize or minimize a
file window.

You will see the different states which are default behaviour.
