Excel 2003 won't create pdf

When trying to print to a pdf printer, or to "Create pdf", Excel 2003
opens the box saying it is printing page 1 - and just hangs there.
Pressing Cancel produces a message the program is not responding.
Closing the window terminates Excel and offers to send a report to
Microsoft (I have sent the report).

After first installing (updating to) Office 2003, Excel did say that
"Create Pdf" was not available and needed to be installed the first time
I tried to do it. I did reinstall Acrobat 4, and that is when the
situation changed to just hanging.

There is no problem with Word 2003, nor another application I've tried.
They work as expected.

The problem has disappeared! I've done two things, neither of which
should have resolved the problem, but it works now. The first thing is
that the system has sat overnight, although it has not been rebooted
since the problem was recurring. The second thing is that I created a
new spreadsheet and did a Create PDF of that and it worked. Then went
back to the one that I had tried yesterday and it now works also.
