Excel 2004 Auto Quits when mouse hovers over Comment Box

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Intel

I have an unattached comment box which decided to float over cells. Each time I move (hover) the mose over the comment box Excel 2004 Automatically Quits.
It's like the Workbook/sheet is corrupted somehow. The problem occurs even when the file is opened on another computer.
Excel 2004 has been updated to the latest (v11.5.3) You can download a small movie (.mov) here showing the problem.

Scroll down to 2. and use the Basic Service, enter the diplayed code, click continue and the movie will download. (<1 MB)

It definitely sounds like corruption - a Comment should *never* become
detached from the cell it pertains to.

If you can right click the Comment cell without invading the Comment's
territory you should be able to select the Delete Comment command from the
short-cut menu then save the file. [Alternatively, navigate to the cell then
use Edit> Clear> Comments.] That may clear up the problem & you can recreate
the Comment if need be.

I have this same issue of scrolling over the detached comment box--that causes my file to crash every time! I cannot delete it--as it crashes when I cursor over it, and I cannot delete the comment because it's not [seemingly] attached to any cell.
I'm using OSX Tiger, Mac for Office 2004, with the most recent update (10 minutes ago).

Can you help?

Thanks!

Don't try to click the cell in the first place - in fact, don't go near it
with the mouse at all :) The commented cell should have a red triangle in
its upper right corner. Select a cell near it then use the keyboard to
navigate to the cell & delete the comment by way of the Edit menu as
suggested in my reply to the OP.

This would be great if it worked. The comment box in question is no longer related to any cell, and the cell it was related to no longer has the Delete Comment option available in the Edit menu. The red triangle is also missing. Thanks but still seeking answer.

I keep getting "no download slots" from filefactory, so I can't see your
movie, but it certainly sounds as if your document is thoroughly
corrupted.

If you have access to WinXL 2003/2007, those applications have a more
sophisticated file recovery capability than XL04, and either may be able
to repair the damage.

Almost as good is to save it as a .xlsx file or a web page. You may lose
some information, but round-tripping it through a XML/HTML should retain
what can be retained.
