Excel 2004: fill series in merged cells

Hiya-

I can't believe that this isn't possible so I shall assume that I'm doing something wrong... Apologies in advance if this is trivial and I'm just being retarded.

I have a number of 'accounts' with different numbers of lines under each main header and it would be nice to be able to fill a linear series down a column of merged cells to have a running count of the number of accounts. I could of course do it manually, but as the number of accounts rises and falls, this would be a pain.

Any assistance would be most appreciated!

You can't fill a series with merged cells (unless ALL the merged cells
have the same number of component cells).

That's one (but only one!) of the reasons I say that merged cells are
the spawn of the devil, and friends don't let friends merge cells...

If you just want to count, click on the status bar (where it says Sum),
choose Count, and select the rows you're interested in.

Alternatively, you could put something like

=COUNTA($B:$B)

in a cell somewhere and get a count of the filled cells.
