Excel 2004 opens ALL files on Desktop: Why??

I'm running Excel 2004 on Mac OS X 10.3.5.

Whenever I launch Excel, from the dock, by double clicking the app, or by
double clicking an Excel document, Excel tries to open every file of
type=document on my desktop. It goes after every single last one of
them...txt files......bin files....pdf files.....jpeg files.....it's painful.....(but does
have the added benefit (?!) of forcing me to keep documents off my
desktop).

I've installed Office 2004 on two other Macs and do not see this behavior.

Any suggestions?

Direct e-mail would be appreciated: (e-mail address removed)

Thanks!!

You've probably set the Desktop to be your Alternate Startup file
location (Preferences/General).
