Mac OS 10.4.11 Excel v11.0 as part of Office Suite for Mac 2004
I can import a .pdf, .doc, .txt into a cell using the hyperlink feature
but Excel can't open any of the above after I have imported.

Also, in Word (same Office Suite for Mac 2004) I can insert a symbol but
the symbols are not available to insert in Excel. For instance, the
copyright
symbol, trademark symbol, a star for ratings (as in five stars).

Please help.
Thanks in advance for your time.

Well Molly - a couple of points for clarification first:)

Based on the info in your post the first thing I would suggest you check is
the update level of Excel/Office. You specify 11.0 but the current update
should be 11.3.9 (although About Excel will display 11.3.7 even with the
complete series of updates applied). If you truly are still at 11.0 or
anything less than 11.3.5 I'd recommend that you launch Check for Updates
from one of the program Help menus, get up-to-date & run Disk Utility -
Repair Disk Permissions afterward. That alone may resolve the problem -
although I'm still not exactly sure what the problem is...

There's a big difference between Importing and Hyperlinking, and it isn't
clear exactly what you've done. I'll assume that you have created hyperlinks
to these various files, but if you've done something other than Insert>
Hyperlink please provide complete details as to what you've done & how.

Secondly, Excel doesn't "open" files you hyperlink to (unless they're Excel
files). A hyperlink is merely a pointer to the file to be opened - in order
for the file to be opened a compatible application must be available. The
app is launched by the OS & opens the file - i.e., docs in Word, PDFs in
Preview or Reader, etc. To be more helpful we'll need to know what happens
when you try to use one of the hyperlinks - accurate detail is important:)

As to your second point, I assume you mean that Excel doesn't have the
Insert> Symbol command you're accustomed to using in Word. That doesn't mean
you can't use the symbols - in fact you have at least two options:

1- Use the Add Objects - Symbols feature on the Formatting Palette, or

2- Even better - learn to use the OS X Character Palette to insert an even
wider array of characters regardless of what program you're using.

If I'm misinterpreting you query please provide more descriptive details.

Hi CyberTaz -
Your help was one of the things I was grateful for over the Thanksgiving
holiday.
Here's what I've done. Still have the problem. Bear with me as I'll go
step by step.

Updated Office Suite for Mac to 11.3.7 for Excel (.8 is for PC users), 11.3.
8 for Word,
11.3.5 for PowerPoint.
Have checked Disk Utility and no Repair/Permissions problem.
Uninstalled and re-installed Adobe 8.1.1
Then deleted said cell .pdf item to re-do it, in case it was causing problem.
Here's how
I specify and select .pdf to add to Excel cell.
In a cell, go to Insert>Hyperlink, selecting Documents from the Edit
Hyperlink window.
HD/Documents/Tape Log Info/GIGs/07-15-94 cl gig.pdf appears in the "link
to" bar.
Click OK and the whole link for the file is in the cell from Documents on....

Adobe Reader and Preview are open.
I still get the notice "Excel cannot open specified file".
On the office helper's PC at her home, she can open .pdf and .jpg 's in
Excel.
Hope this is a bit more correct in detailing.
BTW, you were spot on with the symbol/character insert help and that is
solved.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
