Excel 2004 v11.3.3

Excel for Mac 2004 is repeatedly freezing when I attempt to save my
work - almost hourly, but it does not happen every time. The 'force
quit' function will not close the program, neither a forced shut down
of the computer. The only resolution is holding the power button down
until the computer shuts down.

I am running Mac OS X 10.4.8 with 2GHz Intel Core Duo processor, 1GB
667Mhz DDR2 SDRAM on a MacBook purchased in October 2006. I am
attempting to save to a 128MB thumb drive that I have recently scanned
for viruses (negative), but not errors. I have not had any trouble
opening files from this thumb drive on this or other computers. I
have used the Mac OS X install disc to check complete a Hardware Test,
which showed no errors. I have also tried resetting the System
Management Controller, as suggested on the Apple website, without
resolution of the problem. So now I turn to the software for an
explanation.

I have not used Word for Mac or Powerpoint for Mac as frequently as
Excel for Mac, but I have not encountered the same problem with other
Office applications.

When the freezing occurs, the MacBook seems hotter to touch than
normal, with fan working, and the thumb drive is quite hot on
removing. Finder application can also freeze. I am not sure of the
relevance of this, but can someone help??

Thanks

Hi,
I got the impression that it happens when you try to save your data on
thumbdrive, it's always better idea to save your work to local drive and
then to copy it on particular location. By this process you have alwas some
copy (some backup) if something wrong happens.
Try this if that will solve the problem.

General troubleshhoting for excel freezing could include perfoming
repair/verify disk permition and looking for startup files, however, you
mention that you are saving onto thumdrive so I would start with thethink
above.

And last question, does it happen with any file tyou want to save on
thumdrive or just Particular (that might suggest document corruption).

Long story short, Luke -

*Never* save directly to or open files directly from *any* type of removable
media. Problems of this nature (and worse) are a certainty if you do. Use
removables for storage & transport only - copy/move the file to your HD for
any editing, then move/copy back to the removable if necessary.
