Excel 2004 will not open

I am using OS X 10..3.9 with all known updates installed on a G4 Cube.
I have installed Office 2004 Mac. Now Excel, Word and Powerpoint will
not open. I get the ubiquitous "Microsoft Excel(Word, Powerpoint) has
encountered a problem and must close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience." microsoft says the problem is "Framework problem" with
the OS. I have run Disk Doctor, reinstalled the OS and reinstalled all
updates, but the problem persists. I have an external hard drive upon
which I have installed the OS and Office 2004 and the products open
normally.

Any ideas?

Try resetting disk permissions using the Disk Utility app in the
Applications:Utility folder.

I have tried that and I have also removed Office 2004 and trashed the
Microsoft preferences. I even tried reinstalling the operating system.
The problem seems to occur when Excel (or Word or PowerPoint) gets to
the point of configuring Visual Basic for Applications during startup.
Nothing gave me a good result.

Is your system set for automatic log in? If so, try logging out & back in
again. Sounds silly, but you might be surprised. You may have to
uninstall/reinstall Office, then repair permissions, then log out/in.
