Excel 2007 "Document not Saved" to Network Share 2003

When opening a document from a Shared network drive (MS Windows 2003 Server)
with Excel 2007, The document opens. after making a change I get the
compatability message and continue at which point the message "document not
saved" pops up.

I'm having the same issue on a couple of XP machines with Office '07
installed. I've read several articles that say to remove update KB980232. I
removed this update but still no luck. I think a few more updates need to be
uninstalled, but not sure which ones specifically. I fixed one machine,
hopefully, by doing an OS repair back to XP sp2, but this is not the route I
would like to take. Surely MS has a better fix rather than just "Save
locally, then copy to the network share". That kind of defeats the purposes
of home drives/mapped drives. If anyone has further suggestions or possibly
a HotFix!!!! that would be great.
