Excel 2007 no longer opens documents on desktop or email attachmen

When I click on an excel document on my desktop, I get an error message
saying: "windows cannot find [name of document]. Please make sure you typed
the name correctly, etc." The same thing happens when I try to open an excel
email attachment. If I open Excel and can locate the file through "Desktop"
or "Documents," the same document will open. I ran Office diagnostic which
found nothing wrong. This does not happen with Word 2007 documents on the
desktop.

open a cmd prompt.
this is where it makes difference. in vista you'll have to open it as an
administrator.
navigate to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12

if you're running a 64 bit os,
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12

type in this command: excel.exe /unregserver

then type this command: excel.exe /regserver

if you have issues, let us know which operating system you're running, it

Close Excel if open
Click on Start and then Run
Type the following command (after replacing yourpathtoexcel.exe with the
actual path in your compuer)
Start>Run "C:\yourpathtoexcel2007\excel.exe" /regserver

On my laptop I use
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\Excel.exe" /regserver

note the space before /regserver

excel.exe<sp>/regserver

right click the command prompt start menu item and select run as
administrator. then try the commands i stated.

vista uac blocks this by default.

cmd "help" AND "?" to find out about either "regserver" or "unregserver" I
get that it "is not recognized as an internal or external command." Now I
know this version of cmd.exe is different from the command prompts in the
past, and I may be having a problem with syntax here, but I have tried many
permutations of commands. Apparently I need more explicit instructions form
the command prompt. Thank you for your assistance.

able to execute "unregserver" then "regserver." So then I restarted the
computer and tried to open Excel files from desktop and emails. No change.
Now am I supposed to register multiple paths using this method? desktop?
Temporary internet files?

"excel.exe" is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again."

see if you can do this:

sorry, that won' work.

what about clicking the orb, then excel options
and in the general section. is ignore other applications checked? if so,
uncheck it.

turn off uac in control panel/ users, reboot just to see if this is causing
an issue. just make sure you turn it back on.

The solution was in Excel Options. Somehow a box got checked that should have
been unchecked. "Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange
(DDE)" No idea how the box got checked, but since unchecking it, everything
works normally. The End.
