Excel 2007 pivot tables - calculated fields and SSAS cube

Can you use calculated fields in Excel 2007 pivot tables when the data
source is an SSAS data cube?

I am connecting to a SQL Server 2005 data cube with Excel 2007 and viewing
the data though a pivot table. I want to create calculated fields in my pivot
table, but the "Formulas" button is grayed out.

How do I do create calculated fields (if it is possible when connecting to a
data cube) ?

Not possible. All of the aggregations are handled by Analysis Services. Since
XL is not in charge of the aggregations it has no ability to do custom
calculations...

Hello CraigHB,

Thanks for using Microsoft Newsgroup Support Service, my name is Ji Zhou

I agree with Jim's comment. We cannot create formulas in a PivotTable
report that is connected to an OLAP source data. The related document
describes this is available here,
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel/HP100963231033.aspx (In the first
note section). This is a by designed behavior.

Please feel free to post if you have any future questions or concerns. I
will try my best to help.

Along the same lines ... I've created a cube in BIDS and am accessing it
through Excel. I've noticed that the Show Properties in Tooltips in Excel is
grayed out. I am able to add them to my report, but I was hoping to just
hover over the field and have the attributes display. Is this possible? The
attributes display correctly in the cube browser in BIDS. Thanks in advance!
