Excel 2007 problem

I am having a strange problem with excel 2007.
If open an excel sheet and then close excel the normal way everything is
fine.
If I then reopen excel again and try to close it the normal way nothing
happens.
Excel will close if I use the X in the corner.
I have done a repair install to see if that fixes my problem, but it did not
sort out the problem.
I have tried out the other programs in the office 2007 pro suite to see if
the other parts are effected. They are not.
I am at a loss. I know this is not a critical problem, but as I paid a fair
amount of money for it (High UK price) it would be nice to have it working
fine.
So if anyone could help me or point me in the right direction I would be
eternally grateful.

for what its worth, I tried the same, and Excel closed fine.

You might try removing all add-ins that are loading and see if that cures.
Remove via Office button, Excel Opitons, Add-ins, Manage Add-ins.

The normal way is to press the over sized button and then going down to
"exit excel"

mmmmm, strange. Works fine here.

Do you have any strange add-ins loaded?
Do you wait a while to see if it does close eventually?
Try moving any files out of xlStart and see if that fixes it. If not, put
them back
Are you on a network? (Is it Netware?)
Try disabling your anti-virus temporarily
Make sure your temp folder is empty

Other than that I don't know

Hi Nicholas,

Excel is the oddity of the Office suite. I'm with Nick, I don't understand.
Instead of hitting the "X" (close application), what happens when you use
the Office Menu and click Exit Excel?

That is when excel refuses close. I get a sound, which I have just checked
out and it is the "default sound" which does not give me any idea's what the
sound means?

Thanks Nick for your reply.

I have no strange add-ins loaded?
My xlstart folder is empty?
Today I moved from Kaspersky and I know use NIS 2007 (I have tried to close
excel the anti-virus closed)
I emptied my temp folder...
.... all with no luck???

Thanks for your help. I will have to learn to live with it knowing that
eventually it will be sorted when I reinstall my computer in about a years
time.

Sorry to keep harping... did you *disable* your NAV? Also NAV has an office
integration available through one of the options, switch this off too and
see what happens

Is this the retail version or the beta of 2007?

I don't use excel2007 enough to be helpful, but maybe you could test a couple of
things. It might help get a better diagnosis from others.

Close excel and reopen in safe mode.
hit flying windows-r (to get to the Run dialog)
type:
excel /safe
and hit enter

Then do whatever you want and then close the normal way.

Then do the same thing once again.

Starting excel in Safe mode disables lots of stuff--addins, macros in workbooks
that you open, toolbars (Ribbon customizations?????).

Thanks for the reply Dave, unfortunately it did not work.

I do hope that someone else suffers from this problem. Then at least I will
not be unique.
I have searched on the net for a solution, but nothing came up.

Thanks again

Nicholas, try this to confirm you don't have any "hidden" add-ins loading:

Click the office button and select Excel Options
Select the Trust Center,Trust Center Settings
Under Macro Settings, select the first option, disable all macros without
notification
Under Trusted locations, check on the box to disable all trusted locations
Under Add-ins, check on the box to disable all application addins

Close and reopen Excel and see if the problem continues (you may be asked to
start some add-ins - say no). Once done testing, reset to the previous
values.

Thanks for your reply Bob.

I did what you asked me to do.
I then closed excel the normal way. It closed alright.
I tried it again. It closed alright.
I tried once more. It did not close alright?
