Excel 2007 - Unable to open any excel file a second time

In Excel 2007 (Microsoft Office Home & Student), I can create and open a file
with no problem, initially. The problem only occurs when you try and re-open
the same, or any other Excel file. The program opens with a blank (light
blue) screen with the Customize Status Bar (normally at the bottom of the
screen) on the top, with no other visible toolbars. You cannot do anything
else, other than close the program down. The only ways you can recall
another Excel file is to either leave another Excel file open on the task bar
(i.e. minimised) or re-boot the computer. Another way is to open a Word
document and minimise it on the task bar, then you can open any Excel file.
(Office Diagnostics indicate no problems).

System : Hewlett-Packard M8180 which has Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600,
2.4 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB, 8MB Cache, 3072MB RAM Memory, 500GB Hard Drive, and
Windows Vista Home Premium. Protected by Norton 360 All-In-One-Security, with
current Updates for Vista and Office.

Anybody with any idea’s what may be the problem?

I have the same problem on my office system. Just had a new computer
installed running XP and Microsoft Office. If I try to open an existing
document from My Docs, I get the blue screen you described. The only way to
open the document is to leave up the blue screen and click on the document
icon a 2nd time.

Also when trying to open an Excel attachment in Outlook email, the same blue
screen comes up, and the Outlook screen turns blank, saying "Outlook not
responding." Then the only way to open up the attachement is to click on
"Open" within Excel and then the attachment comes up. What can I do?

I found some solutions from previous discussions and so far none have helped
me. In case someone else wants to try them, here they are in a nutshell:

1. Try holding down the control key while opening up Excel or opening up an
Excel document. For me no documents would open at all while holding down the
Ctrl key.
2. Andy's fix: "Hi - Go to Tools|Options|General and uncheck Ignore Other
Applications. That might sort it out for you. Andy" In 2007, it's Excel
Options|Advanced|General and uncheck Ignore Other Applications. Mine was
already unchecked.
3. This one I didn't try because I don't understand it yet: remove or
rename this file from this folder (HTML.XLAM)
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\Library\HTML.XLAM"
It is the "The Internet Assistant Wizard"

There are threads about this same problem in another forum going back
to Feb 2007. The problem seems to occur randomly but it seems always
to be on Vista and with Excel 2007. While various suggestions are
made (i.e. close Win Explorer first etc.) I have tried everyone of the
suggested solutions (as of today) all to no avail. This is such a
critical issue that it is shocking that this has not been resolved by
Microsoft on what is their latest OS and their latest Spreadsheet. If
the problem occurs when running Office 97 on Vista one could excuse
this but surely not in this case.

The only solution I can think of is to deinstall 2007 from my machine
(after having it for 3 days on a new laptop) and reverting to 2003.
Any ideas to the contrary will be gratefully received.

I have the same problem. When I click on an Excel file or try to open it from
within Excel I often get a light blue screen. I go into task manager and then
close excel.exe under processes or applications. I then restart excel and
that usually allows me to continue it.
