Excel 2007 Why So Slow?

Excel 2007. Since upgrading to Office 2007 from Office 2003 I have noticed a
marked delay in opening my Excel workbooks. The workbook in question has
modules that run on open. In Office 2003 the workbook main sheet came up
right away. Now in 2007 Excel acts like it has opened nothing (blank window)
and remains that way for up to 30 seconds before actually displaying my
workbook's main sheet. THEN it starts executing (ever so slowly) the startup
VBA module. Why is this "new and improved" product so slow in loading my
workbbok and SLOW in completing the startup code? Thanks for any help.

P.S. I am experiencing the same slowness with Word 2007 and Outlook 2007.

I've found that every version of Excel is slower than the previous and Excel
2007 sets a new standard. However I haven't seen anything akin to your
experience. I'd say 'something is going on' but no idea what. Btw, do you
get the same delayed opening if you open a workbook from Excel's File, Open
versus double-clicking a link to the file?

512MB of RAM is not a lot to be using Office 2007. 1gb is probably a minimum.

I think this is a RAM issue. The OP says he has 512Mb of RAM which seems too
little for Office 2007.

I run XL 2007 on a dual core processor with 2gb of RAM and still
occasionally see slow response times.

I have 512mb too and haven't run into a slow opening issue. That doesn't
mean it is not his issue, say if he has a huge workbook. But, absent that,
I suspect something else is going on.

I had a similar problem. A relatively simple spreadsheet would take 30
seconds or more to open when opening by double-clicking the file - that's on
a 3.1 Ghz P4 with 1.5GB. Don't know if the circumstances are the same or
not, but I had an old Acrobat PDFMaker 6.0 installed. I unstalled the entire
Acrobat 6, then when I'd try opening the spreadsheet it would give me
"Compile error in hidden module: AutoExecNew", and it would give me "Compile
error in hidden module: DistMon" when I'd close. Tried repair on Office 2007
- same thing. Then I deleted the leftover file "C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office12\XLSTART\PDFMaker.xla". After that,, I stopped experiencing
the delays on load as well as the error messages.

I have the same problem. I have 1GB memory and the spreadsheet uses only one
sheet and occupies no more than one screen full. I have no virus scan and the
spreadsheet an take up to a minute to load. During the loading time it says
"Ready" at the bottom of the screen. Ready my eye !
