Excel 2007 won't launch workbooks

Opening an .xls or .xlsx file from a short-cut or the file tree seems to
minimize the file until I resize the Excel window (either by resizing or
minimizing). If I open Excel first and then locate the file in the file tree
the workbook opens just fine. Any ideas why it's doing that?
