excel 2008 crashes and is very slow

Hello, I use Excel to manipulate arrays and large data sets. I am new to the mac...I love the machines...but excel 08 has so far been very disappointing. It crashes alot...when copying blocks to opening new files...and it is also very slow (and I run at 3.06)...even just openning an axis editing window can cause beach balls to spin for minutes...which is crazy. I have had a 2 year old Dell Latitude with 2 gigs of ram and a 7200 rpm drive running along side my new iMac (3.06) with 4 gigs of ram and a 7200 rpm drive doing the same manipulations for comparison...the Dell is MUCH faster than is the iMac...infact the iMac is crashing on simple things in excel...why?? I cant imagine how this could be happening...sure Mac is a smaller market than PC...but it can't make economic sense to stamp out a whole market of mac=based number crunchers.

How can I get a more stable version of excel??? Say the 2004 version? Please respond.

Thanks in advance.

Well, the Mac version of Excel is, I'm afraid, just slower than a comparable
Windows version. Hopefully this will be improved in later versions. However,
it does not seem as though it should be as slow as what you are describing.
Are you sure you are at the latest update level of Office 2008? (currently
12.1.4) If not, please apply the updates to see if that makes a difference.

Additionally, Excel 2008 certainly should not be crashing. I have found it
to be very stable. Again. Make sure the updates are applied. If you can
narrow down the crash (any of them) to a specific action, please post the
details here.

Hello Bob, it is so nice to know that someone is listening. As for your
question re the version of excel I am using, the "About Excel" window says the
following:

Version 12.1.3 (080930)
Latest Installed Update: 12.1.4

Is this the most recent? The same is true for my MBP.

Thanks, Rick

Rick,

I'd love to investigate the specific issues you're having. If you could send
details directly to me I will be happy to investigate. For crashes, please
provide me with the steps that lead to the crash, and specific files if
possible, as well as the crash log that's produced when Excel crashes (just
click "More Info' in the Microsoft Error Reporting window and copy/paste the
whole log into an email. The same is true for the performance issues you're
seeing. The more detail you can provide, and files, if possible, the better
able we will be to investigate.

Thanks,

Pat McMillan
