Excel 2008 crashing when saving

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Let me try again as my previous post disappeared from the forum.

I just got a new IMAC with the most updated version of office (12.1.4). i I worked on an excel spreadsheet, and when i try to save it in .xls format it
crashes. when i try to save in .xlsx format it says it wasn't saved. i think it's a serious glitch in the software.

any help?
