Excel 2008 keeps on crashing

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

1. The program jammed up when I opened an excel sheet.
2. When I tried to open excel it would crash on me. This is when I tried to open that excel sheet. I even tried to open Excel directly but it pulls up the old sheet. You can see the outline of the sheet but the software crashes.
3. I reinstalled excel and for some reason it still pulls up that old excel sheet. This sheet is not huge, less that 500k.
4. Then all of a sudden the software works for a day or two until it locks up again on another sheet.

How come the reinstall process does not fix this?

Before any suggestions can be made you need to specify your exact current
update levels of both Office & OS X.

OSX 10.5.7
Office 12.1.7

Since you replied to your original post, not the reply that apparently
asked you the question about versions, I can't tell what you're
responding to.

However, based on your original post:

1) Reinstalling almost never works with Mac applications - they just
don't corrupt very frequently. It's far more likely that your
preferences were corrupted. Unless you used the Remove Office
application prior to reinstalling, those preferences aren't touched, and
so any problem they cause won't be fixed.

2) Unfortunately, if you did reinstall without having run Remove Office,
your current installation may include a mishmash of different versions
of support files. This is one situation where I *would* recommend
Removing and Reinstalling Office.

3) You're a couple of updates out-of-date, so be sure to update fully.

4) When you do crash, XL tries to open the Autorecover file on the next
start up. If that was corrupted (which is certainly possible), then it
will cause XL to crash again. Start up with the Shift key down to bypass
the Autorecovery process, then immediately quit XL. The Autorecover file
will be deleted and won't cause a problem on the next restart.
