Excel 2008 sometimes opens in "read only"

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I create a spreadsheet, save it in my home directory in an .xlsx format and then close it. When I open it again, it then opens in "read only."

If I close Excel (as opposed to just the document), I am able to open the file again normally. This happens with all Excel documents.

Then what you're experiencing is "normal" behavior :) When you open an
Excel file additional temporary files are created. If you never Quit the
program some of those temporary files remain open giving the false
indication that the file is still in use. Quitting the program helps insure
that the temp files do get closed.

BTW: The same basic principle applies to OS X itself. The Mac needs to be
restarted periodically, not just allowed to sleep for days on end.

I should also mention that this occurs "across" files once Excel has been opened. That is:
I open File A and work on it.
I save and close File A.
I click on File B (one that I had worked on a previous day) and it opens as read-only.
