excel 97 crashes upon Tools | Options in XP

I just installed Excel 97 on a Windows XP machine. When
I go to Tools | Options, I get an error message that
says "Microsoft Excel has encountered a problem and needs
to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Do I
need a service patch? Thanks a lot!
