Excel 97 Crashes When using Tools =>Options with Win xp

Mary Weatherford

When I try to open the "Options" section in Tool the Microsoft closes
because it has encountered a problem which is indecipherable to me. I have a
new computer with Win XP SP2. I did not have this problem with Win 98.
This is the first part of the message going to Microsoft. Further on it
mentions CHECKSUM="0xC4B6EE5F" and other CHECKSUM statements
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-16"?>

Does anyone know how to fix this? I don't think sending error reports to
Microsoft does one whit of good. I imagine they want me to get a later
version of Office.

Thank you,
Mary

Bob,
Sorry but that didn't help at all. I save all of my Excel Documents on a Zip Disk, not my hard drive. I thought I cleared our the Default File Location box because I want to choose where I save my files.

The knowledge base told me I had to download SP2, that was the problem. I have Office SP1.
I did that and saved it to my hard drive but when I tried to run it I got the message that
sr2bof97.exe is not a valid Win32 Application

I tried running Excel using the compatibility wizard with Win 95 and W98 but that didn't work either.

Do you have any more suggestions because I am stumped?

Mary

In addition many of commands I put on the toolbar have gone.I customized it
for my own use adding and deleting commands that I use. This is a new
wrinkle.

Any ideas?

Thank you

Hi Mary,

<<I thought I cleared our the Default File Location box because I want to
choose where I save my files.>>

I would recommend verifying this just in case. You can look in the
registry and determine what the default file location is set to in the
following manner:

1) Click the Start button, choose the Run menu, enter "regedit" without the
quotes in the Run dialog and click OK. This will start the registry editor.

2) Use the left side treeview to navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Excel\Microsoft Excel

3) In the right side list, locate "DefaultPath" in the name column and check
what Data column value is assigned to it. This will be the same as the entry
displayed by Excel in the Tools/Options dialog.

By the way, having this setting doesn't prevent you from saving files
where you want to save them. It just sets the path the Save As dialog will
display the first time you save a workbook. You can save the workbook
somewhere else and it will continue to be saved there on subsequent saves.

<<The knowledge base told me I had to download SP2, that was the problem.>>

No, I don't think that's likely to be the problem in this case.

<<In addition many of commands I put on the toolbar have gone.I customized
it for my own use adding and deleting commands that I use. This is a new

This sounds like it might be a corrupt XLB file problem. Use Explorer to
search your hard drive for files with a .xlb file extension. Delete any that
you find. Excel uses these files to store toolbar customizations but they
frequently become corrupted and cause all sorts of problems. Excel will
create clean new versions when you start it up, but you will lose any
toolbar customizations that you've made. Note that .xlb files may be marked
as hidden, so you'll need to have Explorer set to display hidden files.

Hi Bob!
I'll try your suggestion when I get to my home computer. In the
meantime do you have any idea why I got the Win32 error message when I
tried to install it?
Thanks,
Mary

THANK YOU ROB!

I re-named the My Documents file and the Tools=>Options now works.
I cleared out the default file location in Excel.
And I think you may be right about the Office 97 Sp2 was corrupted.
