excel 97 invalid pg fault in excel.exe

When I try to open excel 97 I get a pop-up saying "program
performed illegal operation and will shut down".
Details state " invalid page fault in excel.exe at
0257:30015421"
Program has operated without trouble until yesterday, when
I updated Internet Explorer to 6.0.
Help please!!!
