Excel 97 says document already open when trying to open a document

Whenever I open an Excel spreadsheet in My Documents the
spreadsheet opens but then I get a dialogue box saying
that it is already open and to close the original
document. When I open the document from Excel it does
not have any problems. How can I get rid of this
dialogue box?
