Excel 97/Windows XP issue

G

George Randall

Whenever I open an Excel file, I get a message warning me
that a document of the same name is already open (as if it
is trying to open the file twice).

This only happens when Excel launches after I browse to a
file and double click, or if I choose a file from the
recent documents list. If I start Excel, then open the
file, I don't get the message. If Excel is already running
and I browse to a file through Explorer or the recent
document list, it doesn't happen.

I have SR2 installed. I thought this same behavior was
happening with other office programs, but I just tried it
with Word and Power Point and didn't get the message. I
had Office 97 installed under Win98 with no problem. This
behavior began immediately after installing under WinXP.

Thanks for your help.

Hi George,

More than likely the file association contains an error and references
the file name ("%1") twice. You can recreate the file association by
going to Start/Run and run:

excel /regserver

Note the space before the forward slash.
