Excel and Installer question

I have a problem that began only when I tried to perform
an "Office Update"

· This computer originally had a 98SE Operating
System
· About a month ago I upgraded to Windows XP Home
Edition
· Everything worked fine including Excel
· Last week I began an "Office Update". During this
download I was asked to insert the office 2000 SP1. I did
so but the download was aborted because it could not find
what it was looking for on the disk.
· At some point in trying this I received a message
indicating that data1.msi was being looked for. Nothing I
did could seem to find this. I gave up on the Update.
· The next day I went to use an Excel spreadsheet
and found that I could not bring it up. I began to get
the following error message: "Windows Installer could not
be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in
Safe Mode or if the Windows Installer is not correctly
installed.
· I tried to get help from Gateway (2-1166325600)
and received a silly recommendation regarding Microsoft
Money
· I believ that something called Installer has
become corrupted as I am unable to Uninstall Office as
was recommended in one of the knowledge base printout I
thought might work

I am now stuck and looking for a solution.
