Excel and PowerPoint doc not opening through WSS 3.0

I have recently set-up a WSS 3.0 site on Small Buisness Server 2008 for my
company. The WSS site is SSL enabled using port 443 with a certificate. The
site is running SP2 and CU October 2009. For one I am not sure if I need to
run each CU or if the most recent contains all of them. I have users in all
different parts of the use on all different types of networks so
troubleshooting this problem has been difficult. Right now some users are not
able to edit MS Excel or PowerPoint documents. They all have no problem with
Word. It seems to be a consistent problem with Office 2007. I work on a
military base with pretty heavy security. I have no issues with the site and
any type of MS document on my Windows XP machine. I have a laptop though on
the same network running Microsoft Vista and Office 2007 and I get the same
error some of my users are getting.

The error being:
MS Office Excel cannot access the file "https://sitename/filename.xls. There
are several possible reasons:
- The file name or path does not exist
- The file is being used by another person
- The workbook you are trying to save has the same name as the current open
workbook

The interesting thing to all this is that I am also a developer and systems
admin for a MOSS 2007 Standard site on the base. And from the same two
machines above I have no issues editing any documents; Word, Excel, or
PowerPoint from this site that is SSL enabled with Common Access Cards for
authentication.

So you know I am not using forms authentication on the WSS site, I am using
Windows Authentication. I was having more issues with Forms Auth before so I
went back to Windows Auth. Any help that anyone can give would be very
appreciated. Thanks, Anthony.
