Excel and Word in Office 2003 experriences Delayed opening

Hi, Good Day
I have an office 2003 installation that was working well untill some
automatic updates were installed (which literarily drags the machine). Now
the excel takes about five minutes to open if i click the excel file (.xls)
but opens easily if i open the excel from the program files and then
subsequently open the file. I have uninstalled and re-installed excel but
still not ok. Any ideas?

If you run Excel in safe mode (excel /safe) does that speed up the
performance? This kind of thing is often caused by add-ins being installed
without your knowing it; if you haven't already, I'd check the items
discussed in the article:
