Excel and Word menus

I customize my Excel and Word menus with those commands
that I use the most. From time to time the customize menu
is replaced with the default and I have to reconfigure it
again. Is there any way to protect the normal.dot and the
book1.xlt files so they cannot be over-written?

Actually, it's not book1.xlt in excel. It's *.xlb (name and location vary with
versions of excel and windows).

You can use windows|Find to search for it. Once you've found it, back it up to
a nice safe spot.

When something bad happens, just plop your backup copy right on top of the bad
version.

Also, excel does have a book.xlt (stored in your XLStart folder) that is used as
the template for new workbooks--but it isn't use with the toolbar stuff.)

And I use MSWord just enough to be dangerous, but I back up my normal.dot to a
nice safe location, too--just in case.

You could try chaning the attributes of *.xlb and normal.dot to Readonly.
Rightclick on each file in windows explorer and choose properties.

But then it'll become a pain if you really want to update it. (I like the
backups better.)
