Excel asking if I want to save changes

I am new to Excel 2--7, having used Quattro Pro for many years and I have
received very useful assistance from this group. I have what is probably a
pretty basic question, but I can't find an answer in the Help files.

Every time that I open Excel and then exit, whether I have even loaded a
file, I get the question 'Do you want to save the changes'. I can make no
changes and even, as I said, not open a file, and I still get this message.
Is there something that I can set to avoid this message?

Excel asks this when the user has done nothing to the spreadsheet under two
conditions:
1) The file was made in an earlier version of Excel (say Excel 2003 file
open in Excel 2007)
2) The workbook contains "volatile" functions. An obvious volatile function
in =TODAY() since this must be recalculated every time the workbook is
opened or changed. For more details see

Thanks Bernard, I converted a Quattro Pro spreadsheet to Excel and it
converted to a version earlier than 2007. That must be my problem. I have
it working fine in Excel now and would like to get rid of that query. Is
there any way that I could do that? I have tried saving it through Excel
with several different extensions, but after reloading what I saved, I still
get the query. Am I stuck with that? I know that I could start with a
fresh spreadsheet and rewrite the cell contents and I assume that would
correct the problem but that is a lot of work.

I don't appear to have any 'volatile' functions in the spreadsheet.

When you choose Save As, pick the top choice in the Save As Type box and
click Save. Then close and reopen the file and see if the problem goes away.

Remember if you have any of these functions in the workbook you will be
asked to save changes because they are volatile: NOW, TODAY, RAND, OFFSET,
CELL, INDIRECT, and INFO

Thanks Shane, I thought that I had done that before but it worked this time
so I guess I didn't. I selected several file types when using 'save as' but
I guess I missed that one.

You say in your post, "If this helps, please click the Yes button.". Where
is the Yes button?
