Excel attempts to open non-existent file

When i click on the icon of an existing Excel file on my desktop, Excel also attempts to open a pdf file that was previously deleted from the computer. Excel ends up trying to open the non-existent pdf file plus any png files that happen to also be on the desktop. The pngs open up as jibberish.

The error notice for the pdf file reads: "HD:Users:me:documents:folder:filename could not be found. Check the spelling of the file name, and verify that the file location is correct.

If you are trying to open the file from your list of most recently used files on the file menu, make sure that the file has not been renamed, moved, or deleted. OK."

The excel file that i am trying to work on does open after the error message or messages are dismissed.

I still have Office X installed. Excel X for Mac opens the file up with no problems or strange behaviors.

Check in the Excel preferences to see if you have selected to open all files
in a directory.

Does Excel attempt to open all of those files if you click a different or
newer Excel workbook on the desktop?
